Let My People Go! - This clock stays on my wall until it happens.

New Here?
Ghostsurfers.com was the web domain for Ghostsurfers Intl. The domain name was not renewed by Carvin's business partners, Jim Haskins and Rich Mill. Ghost-surfers.com (spelled with a dash) was purchased in October, 2010 in order to tell the story of the original GhostSurfers.com, which had been acquired by Great Domains during Haskins' illness. Carvin reacquired GhostSurfers.com in March, 2011 after negotiating a high price with the domain holding company. It now serves as an Advisory Board resource site as GhostSurfers is being redeveloped for the mobile age.

Don't get GhostSurfers confused with Ghostsurf - a software program that covers your tracks. We have nothing to do with that. And we are not associated with the punk band, Ghost Surfers, either. All those are new. They've taken our name, but probably quite innocently. No litigation is planned.

You are probably also wondering how it is that people got paid to surf the web. Wouldn't it be nice if FaceBook paid you by the hour to share with your friends? Well, that is exactly what we did, and we used other people's money to do it!

Sounds crazy but this was no gimmick. You will notice that while FaceBook is running, there are advertisements on the right side of your page. That is how FaceBook makes most of their money. We did more than share a portion of that revenue with our members. We developed a system where the power of ghosts could flow thru web sites. We referred to this as "influence." The more friends you brought into the network, the greater your influence. There were a few people who understood this back in 2000. That is why so many members joined so fast and Ghostsurfers.com hit the top 100 most visited web sites wordwide in less than three months. Much as it is true that people who have thousands of friends on Twitter and other social networks can reach people, these early members knew that there was value in influence. GhostSurfers provided a way to reach not just your friends but all of the friends your friends were connected with.

What is really quite remarkable is that we were able to share a portion of the ad revenues with our members without ever having to solicit advertisers or spend any of our own money. Further, our own traffic was not generated by incentivized surfing, as was typical in the Surf4Pay industry, but by the search tools and content on our site. Our focus was search and social, but the best of what we had planned was never even announced.

Before FaceBook, before Twitter, before MySpace, GhostSurfers was developing the first social network - only we were more like the UnFaceBook. We respected privacy. We were ghosts and we had a conscience. "How much are you being paid to surf the web" was just an advertisement. Our motto was "our ghosts have halos for a reason." There was much more to what we were than what first met the eye.

That was just the beginning of the story. We never fully developed the program because we were never funded. The majority of our development plan was put on hold as we were years ahead of our time. What we needed was a great deal more evolution in the market. And now for the good news - with the introduction of video streaming and social networking in a mobile communications age, that shift has finally taken place. We are ready to relaunch! This time not to be martyred. This time to shine in glory!

Member Links Still Out There?!
No ghost story would be interesting without a little intrigue. All digital files from GhostSurfers.com were lost in the hacking incident of August 2001 by the extortionists who killed us. The sabateurs were very thorough, deleting not only our public server files, and all seven back ups, but also Carvin's home computer files in subsequent incidents, and all their back ups too. It is clear that the evil doers intended to permanently put us out of business. One was a man who identified himself as Anatole from Russia. We refused to pay him the money he was asking for our data.

One underlying fact trumped the incident and we knew it. You can't kill ghosts. Knowing we were too far ahead of our time to get the party started anyway, we let the business go. We let it go knowing in our hearts that it would come back one day.

Then in October, 2010 FaceBook hit 500 million users and a movie came out called "The Social Network." As much as we liked seeing families and friends unite and the age of communication start flowering, there was a certain injustice in Zuckerberg's success. This was supposed to have been ours. It was at that time that we started asking ourselves whether the world was ready for us to rise from the dead.

Rising from the dead would take a miracle since we had no images, not even our own logo. Except for a little bit of hard copy we had from some old business plans we couldn't even prove we had existed.

We went online to see if anyone had copied any of the Ghost Surfer images so we could get them back. Sure enough, even though the web site itself had been off line since the hacking, there were still a number of member links pointing to Ghostsurfers.com member pages. Even though the pages themselves were long dead, a good many of our images were retrievable from the links pointing to them. The web remembers. And the ghosts are still out there!

You see, the sabateurs were not able to kill us. Just as we knew in our hearts, you can't kill ghosts. We were surrounded by a cloud of witnesses. Here are some examples ...

Julsha's Cafe Press Site - Nice designs Julsha! Hope you made some sales!

Epinion Review - 3 1/2 checks on sixteen epinions. Not shabby.

Kirkland84 on Fortune City - Good plug! Though we recommend you look at the Patent App. to see what we were really about.

SpiritRider Sig File - Thanks for the promo SpiritRider!

Network54 Forum - Do you like hunting for ghosts? Here is a discussion of the GhostSurfer Game dating to Feb., 2001 that never got deleted. Proof we were there!

From all of this we were able to retrieve not only our logo but all of the memorabelia you see on the left side of this page, not only still available, but in a format that makes purchases possible to this day. The rest is available on paper copy, which we were able to scan. Here is an old $10 ghost buck ...

Ghost Bucks! Hey, remember these?

Copies of Copies
Snap! All we could find of our ghost bucks were copies of copies. And, of course, the hackers deleted the original files and all digital copy. But there is nothing that can't be recreated. In fact, we have already begun reconstruction. Here is a new crisp digital version of the emblem on the right ..

Gost Bucks emblem - right side - mirior invictus!

None of these reflections are simple hind sight. From the start, GhostSurfers has been about rising from the dead. The words "Mirior Invictus" mean "In death unconquered." It is the Carvin family motto. There is poignant irony in the fact that as a web phenomenon we would be put to death yet one day rise again.

The emblem on the left side of the Ghost Buck is still legible. We'll doctor it up when we reproduce it but here is what was preserved ...

The left emblem of the Ghost Buck - "GhostSurfers Treasure Chest of the Worldwide Underground"

For those of you who are new here, you are probably wondering what Ghost Bucks and the "Ghostsurfers Treasure Chest of the Worldwide Underground" is all about. Ghost bucks are the currency of the underground economy. In the Ghost Surfer Game, a cryptic order of monks hiding in a labyrinth of caves and grave sites connected to the catacombs throughout the earth which they have been digging for 2000 years have been preparing for the coming of an evil tyrant which they believe will take over the world forcing everyone that doesn't want to be enslaved by him to seek refuge in the network they have built. Many of these thoughtful monks have left behind treasure, some of it incidental, some of it planned for survival and trade.

The plan of the monks was to develop an entire economy for a future generation apart from the tyrant's system. To make buying and selling possible during the reign of the tyrant, Ghost Bucks must be accepted as a form of pay. Ghostsurfers Intl. has an escrow fund for paying advertisers who accept Ghost Bucks.

Watch out for evil ghosties and gooks. You never know what you may find while hunting for treasure in or around the catacombs and the many graveyards that connect them.

The monks were very crafty. They didn't want the tyrant to discover them so they left clues for finding hidden treasure that only the initiated, those with certain keys, could solve. For those seeking treasure, GhostSurfers provides a worldwide virtual treasure hunt. A whole lot of treasure, including Ghost Bucks, will appear in some of the most unexpected places. Don't worry. You're a ghost. You can't get killed. But there are a few grave robbers down there, and at some point, if you believe in the story of these monks, you may also see the tyrant's henchmen, as well. Whoever they are, they all want to take away any treasure you've found. Follow the clues and you'll learn to protect yourself, survive and even thrive in what would otherwise be a very dark underworld.

Redevelopment is now under way!
Our development plan didn't get as far as the GhostSurfer Game, and this was just one of the goodies we had in store for our members. We are redeveloping the site right now and will be announcing our grand opening any day. The timing is perfect. Stay posted! The Ghost Hour is close at hand ...
